It’s a brand new year and what better way to start 2017 than by welcoming a new member to the OVG team. Lewis Hayter joined us last October as Junior Developer so we’ve decided to take a look back at the last few months to see how he’s settled into his role so far.
Like with any new job, I felt pretty nervous before my first day. I had that many emotions running through me – including apprehension, curiosity and excitement – that by the time the night before arrived, I just wanted to get stuck into my new role.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first arrived at OVG, but as soon as I entered the room I was welcomed with open arms. The office seemed quite relaxed so I didn’t feel intimidated which definitely made me feel more at ease.
On my first day I was introduced to everyone and naturally, I was worried I wasn’t going to remember everyone’s names. However, during the speed dating session, where each member of the team sat with me and told me a bit about themselves, I was able to get to know everyone a little better.
It was a good ice breaker because it gave me the opportunity to speak to every single person in detail on my first day. I’ve never worked with such a diverse group before so it was exciting to learn everyone’s job roles and interests during the session and I was able to find out things I have in common with certain people.
I got on particularly well with Mark, who is also on the Dev team, as he helped me with my computer equipment and acted as a mentor in my first month. It was handy having Mark there in case I was stuck or I needed some advice, particularly when it came to learning more about development tools and how the department works as a whole.
I’m pleased with how far I’ve come in such a short space of time and that’s thanks to the wonderful team of people I have around me. I’m looking forward to working on more projects in the future with OVG and continuing to learn more about my role.
